Icon Tutorial 1
Today we'll turn this: (Scan by teefytartar) to:

Firstly, duplicate the first layer 3 times. Depending on your picture you may want to exclude a couple of things. Starting from the top, set the first top layer to the blending mode Soft Light, Opacity 100%, the second layer from the top to the same blending mode and opacity as the one above. The Third layer from the top, set that to the blending mode Screen, Opacity 50% and you should end up with this:

Now create a new layer and fill it with #012233 and set the blending mode of that layer to Exclusion, Opacity 100%.

Create another layer and fill it with #a2e1fe and set the blending mode of that layer to Color Burn, Opacity 100%.

Now comes the tricky part. Duplicate your base layer (the first layer) and bring it to the top. Desaturate this layer by going to Image>Adjustments>Desaturate. Sharpen this layer (Filter>Sharpen>Sharpen) and set this layer to blending mode, Softlight, Opacity 100%. I duplicated this layer another 2 times but you might not have to.

Look at the difference this makes:

1 Desaturated layer:

2 Desaturated layers:

3 Desaturated layers:

Now make another layer and fill it with #a2e1fe and set the blending mode of that layer to Color Burn, Opacity 100%

And it should look something like this:

Now we get to the texturing part. You can forget about this part if you want to. I got this texture from

damnicons

Copy and paste this picture into your psd and set it's blending mode to Linear Burn, Opacity 100%

If i just left it like that it would look really odd. Like this: . So get your eraser tool and erase the parts of her face. Now it looks much better!

Now I got this texture from

arisubox. Here it is

Add it to your psd. I placed mine at the top of the psd so it looks like a border type thing. I also transformed it (Edit>Transform>Rotate) to around a 45 degree angle, and duplicated that layer and also put it at the bottom of the psd. I also erased some unwanted parts that would wreck the icon. You can do whatever you want though! It really depends on the picture you're using. Also don't forget to set the layer to Blending Mode:

Linear Burn, Opacity 100% Now mine looks like this

Now I simply just got a tiny text brush from www.colorfilter.net and brushed it in green. Whenever you make icons, try to use colours that look good with the picture. It'd be pretty weird having a green icon and then putting pink all over it.

Then I just added some text with the font "Carnivalee Freakshow" and I got this:
